South Korea's Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) on September 12 granted construction permits for two new nuclear reactors on the country's east coast, nearly 10 years after the applications were submitted.

The NSSC announced that at its regular meeting in September, the NSSC approved the proposal of Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) to build the Shin-Hanul 3 and Shin-Hanul 4 reactors in Uljin County, North Gyeongsang Province, about 224km southeast of Seoul.

This is the first nuclear reactor construction license granted since 2016, when the government gave the green light to the Saeul 3 and 4 reactors in Ulsan.

The application for a license to build the Shin-Hanul 3 and Shin-Hanul 4 reactors was submitted in January 2016, but the project was suspended in 2017 due to changes in energy policy by the administration of former President Moon Jae In.

The review process was restarted in July 2022, after President Yoon Suk Yeol took office and announced the continuation of the project.
