6 things to consider before changing jobs

A recent UK survey found that Gen Z doesn't stigmatize frequent job-hopping, with 70% of Gen Z actively or passively looking for a new job.

The main motivations for finding a new job include better pay and mental health support. However, job-hopping also has some disadvantages, namely the phenomenon of “switch shock”.

A 2022 survey by The Muse found that 72% of job hoppers experienced the realization that “this isn’t what they expected or believed” when starting a new job.

According to Rob Phelps, founder of AI Jobs, job-hopping is a big decision, so there are things you need to consider before making a new choice.

Are you still passionate about your current job?

The first thing to ask yourself is whether you feel passionate about what you do. If you're basically "quietly quitting," not eager to seek new challenges, and just doing the bare minimum, then your desire to switch jobs may not be entirely unfounded.

This lack of motivation is a sure sign that your current role isn't fueling your career and it might be time to look for something that excites you again, Rob explains.

Is your mental health suffering?

There's a big difference between stressful times at work and work-related mental health issues, which can cause feelings of burnout and dread that make it difficult to switch off, relax, and enjoy your personal life.

Rob advises people to listen to their body and mind, and consider the impact work is having on their sleep, appetite and temper.

Does the job have room for your growth?

In some cases, you may love your job but still have to leave because there is no room for growth.

According to Rob, signs of this include feeling like you've learned everything you can and there's no room for growth or advancement, or you're consistently exceeding your manager's expectations but not getting promoted.

Staying in a stagnant role can hinder your career growth and sometimes the only way to move up is to move to another company.

Does the Sunday dread set in?

If the thought of going back to work on Monday makes you dread it and you contemplate calling in sick, this suggests your body is signaling the need for a career change.

Do you and your co-workers get along?

While you don’t necessarily have to be best friends with your co-workers, being surrounded by negativity, gossip, disrespect, or bullying can get you into trouble. This environment can cause constant anxiety and stress that can affect you both mentally and physically.

Do you have a good work-life balance?

Some people are more committed to their work than others, but in general, you should always have time to do things outside the office, whether it's socializing with friends, pursuing personal hobbies...

Lack of work-life balance can lead to burnout and fatigue.

Charlotte Davies, career expert at LinkedIn - the global social network for jobs, says it's important to consider what you value most in your career before jumping ship: location, finances, relationships.

If you eventually come to the conclusion that your current role can't deliver what you want, it might be time to look for somewhere that can meet your expectations.
