Three things Gen Z prioritizes above work

Family time, health, and travel are more important than work in Gen Z's life.

Gen Z, born between 1997 and 2012, grew up as true digital natives, with access to more information than any other generation. According to a recent survey by software company Visier, Gen Z’s top life priorities include: time with family and friends; health; and travel. These three goals were rated as more important than work, reflecting the generation’s changing attitude towards life.

The survey found that 67% of Gen Z respondents said that spending time with family and friends is a top priority in life. They said that when they observed that previous generations sacrificed too many relationships and happiness for work, they found this "not worth it".

Dr. Diane Gayeski, former principal of the Roy H Park School of Communication (New York, USA), commented that Gen Z has the ability to promote changes to improve work-life balance. They want to work for organizations they admire, while building a life "with time to enjoy family and other pleasures".

Chelsea Cohen, co-founder of management software company SoStocked, agrees that Gen Z can be very good at separating work life from personal life. This generation is highly self-aware and sees the workaholic lifestyle of the previous generation as a warning sign because it negatively affects health.

Additionally, 46% of Gen Z employees rate good mental and physical health as a top ambition. “Gen Z has seen the toll that work-centric life takes on their families and is very sensitive to their physical and mental health,” Gayeski said.

Not only are they more likely to discuss these issues openly at work, but they also want their employers to offer mental health-related services and benefits, such as paid time off for self-care or on-site meditation spaces, according to Phillip Kane, CEO and business consultant.

Companies that recognize the importance of mental health for Gen Z employees will attract and retain the best people.

Finally, about 58% of Gen Z employees see travel as a major goal. Born into a hyper-connected world, they value experiences and exploration. Some want to be able to advance their careers while traveling by working remotely. With the Covid-19 pandemic, many remote work apps have emerged to improve this ability.

Other generations can learn from Gen Z about finding work-life balance. First, before accepting a job, evaluate the company culture, prioritizing flexibility, vacation time, and health benefits. Find companies that align with your personal values.

At work, don't forget to set boundaries, practice mindfulness, and don't be afraid to use vacation days to maintain your mental health. Keep perspective on what's most important in life.

Life is about more than just work, so nurture close relationships, pursue hobbies, travel when possible, and keep an eye on your health. Happiness comes from many factors, not just your salary.

When people find an employer who cares about their employees' well-being, they can advance in their careers while still pursuing their passions.
