On April 27, at the Ha Long Beer and Squid Cake Festival, the biggest and heaviest squid cake in Vietnam was confirmed by the Vietnam Record Organization (VietKings).
Accordingly, the squid cake weighs 210kg, is 3.4m long, 0.5cm high; equivalent to about 400 normal squid cakes. The frying pan is square, longer than 3.4m, wider than 3.4m, and 60cm high. When frying, the cook must use 18 gas stoves, 4,000 liters of cooking oil; the mold to make the largest squid cake in Vietnam is round, 2.6m in diameter, 30cm thick. To flip the cake while frying, the chef must use a winch and it takes 25 people to work for 3-4 hours.
After being displayed, the biggest and heaviest squid cake in Vietnam was cut into many small pieces for diners to enjoy.
Squid cake is a delicious dish that many tourists want to enjoy when coming to Quang Ninh. This is also one of the 50 famous specialties of Vietnam recognized by the Vietnam Record Book Center. The cake is made from cuttlefish caught in the waters of Ha Long or Van Don. After being purchased, the cuttlefish will be processed by production facilities, cleaned and pounded by hand, shaped into cakes, fried and cooled, and vacuum-sealed immediately to preserve the fresh flavor. Ha Long squid cake is delicious, crunchy, seasoned with just enough spices; suitable to eat with rice rolls, sticky rice, rice... This is an indispensable dish on the tray of offerings, and also a dish to entertain guests of Ha Long people in particular, and Quang Ninh people in general. In 2013, Ha Long squid cake was registered as a collective trademark and geographical indication.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Minh, Permanent Vice Chairman of Ha Long City People's Committee shared that through the festival, Ha Long's seafood products, including squid rolls, will continue to be spread to many tourists, while demonstrating the local hospitality and introducing culinary dishes to domestic and foreign tourists. Promoting beauty and brand, creating a strong spread is a bridge connecting businesses. Ha Long aims to welcome 10 million visitors by 2024, of which international visitors will reach 2 million; total revenue from tourism activities will reach 22,000 billion VND.
Ha Long Beer and Squid Cake Festival takes place until May 1.
