The reason why 5 people in Bac Kan had to be hospitalized after eating at a sidewalk hot pot restaurant was alcohol poisoning. These people have been discharged from the hospital.
On October 20, the Department of Health of Bac Kan province sent a report to the People's Committee of this province and the Department of Food Safety (Ministry of Health) regarding the food poisoning incident at Chiem Coi hotpot restaurant (Thanh Nien street area, Song Cau ward, Bac Kan city) that caused 5 deaths. people who have to go to the emergency room
Accordingly, the results of food sample testing for investigation by the National Institute for Food Safety Control, responded on October 19 to the Bac Kan Department of Health, showed that the methanol content calculated as a percentage of volume in the half-drunk cup of wine and the bottle of white wine on the dining table was 16.7% v/v.
"This content is many times higher than the regulation in TCVN 7043:2013 on white wine," the document stated. According to regulations, the methanol content must not exceed 2,000 mg/1 liter of ethanol at 100 degrees. Combined with the clinical signs reported by Bac Kan General Hospital, the provincial Department of Health concluded that this type of food poisoning was street food, caused by alcohol.
Previously, at around 7:30 p.m. on October 17, a group of 5 people, including 2 women and 3 men, all with addresses in Bac Kan, entered the Chiem Coi hot pot restaurant (Thanh Nien Street, Song Cau Ward, Bac Kan City). The dishes served included a pot of hot pot broth, with cooked pig's blood, rib cartilage, small intestine, mushrooms, porridge, vegetables...
After eating and drinking alcohol for about 10 minutes, all 5 people showed signs of poisoning such as dizziness, pale skin, dry mouth and vomiting..., including 1 young man with more severe signs of poisoning.
This man was first brought to the hospital by an ambulance from Bac Kan General Hospital at 8:00 p.m. At that time, the patient was cyanotic, had difficulty breathing, was faint, had low blood pressure, and dilated pupils. The medical team at the Emergency Department treated him with gastric lavage, oxygen therapy, and gastrointestinal lavage, according to the protocol for emergency poisoning. In the next 10 minutes, the remaining 4 patients were taken to the hospital.
By October 20, all patients were discharged from the hospital after their health stabilized.
October 19,Mr. Tac Van Nam, Director of the Department of Health of Bac Kan province, said that on October 18, the provincial health sector took 15 food samples (including alcohol) right at the hot pot restaurant to send for testing. Chiem Coi hot pot restaurant, where the patients ate hot pot, has also been temporarily suspended.
On October 20, the Department of Health of Bac Kan province also submitted to the Provincial People's Committee an official dispatch to rectify state management of food safety.
