On September 25, Indian police announced that at least two people died and two others lost their eyesight after drinking fake alcohol.

The incident happened in the eastern state of Bihar.

Sources said that information about two deaths was received in Pokharia Pir area.

According to the victims’ family, three days ago, these people returned home drunk. They then became ill and died during treatment.

Local authorities also reported two cases of vision loss after drinking alcohol.

Indian police have expanded their investigation to identify the liquor sellers in the above cases to prevent the sale of fake liquor.

According to local police, the number of people affected by drinking fake alcohol could increase as police and law enforcement officers go door-to-door to look for people who have health problems after drinking fake alcohol.

Since 2016, the Bihar state government has banned the sale and consumption of alcohol after women's activist groups demanded to stop poor laborers from spending all their money on alcohol.

However, alcohol poisoning cases leading to death and injury still occur.

In December 2022, more than 90 people died and many were hospitalized after drinking fake alcohol.
