On August 14, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced his decision not to run for the election for the presidency of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), scheduled to take place in September.

The decision comes as Mr Kishida's popularity is at a serious low due to the impact of the LDP's fundraising scandal and the sharp rise in consumer prices that has caused public discontent.

In response to the political fundraising scandal involving factions within the LDP, Prime Minister Kishida has been carrying out party reforms such as disbanding factions and taking disciplinary action against relevant lawmakers, as well as revising the Political Funds Control Law, as he believes this is necessary to restore confidence in politics.

However, with public criticism continuing to rise and the cabinet's approval rating falling, there is a growing voice within the LDP that "the current administration cannot fight in the next Lower House election" scheduled for October 2025.

By law, Mr Kishida will step down as prime minister after the LDP has a new president following the September election, as the party currently holds a majority in parliament.

Prime Minister Kishida, who took office in October 2021, has been in office for 1,046 days as of August 14, becoming the eighth longest-serving prime minister since the war, after former Prime Minister Kishi Nobusuke.
