Member of the Party Central Committee of the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th terms; Member of the Politburo of the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th terms; member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the 8th term; Chairman of the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam of the 11th and 12th terms; General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam of the 11th, 12th, 13th terms; President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for the 2016-2021 term, Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council; Secretary of the Central Military Commission; Member of the Standing Committee of the Central Public Security Party Committee; Head of the Central Steering Committee on anti-corruption and anti-negativity. After a period of serious illness, despite the devoted treatment of the Party, the State, the collective of leading professors and doctors, and the wholehearted care of his family, due to old age and serious illness, he passed away at 13:38 on July 19, 2024 (ie June 14, Giap Thin year), at the 108 Central Military Hospital, Hanoi, at the age of 80.
During nearly 60 years of service, Comrade has made many great and outstanding contributions to the glorious revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation. He was awarded the Gold Star Order, the 55-year Party membership badge, and many other noble Vietnamese and international Orders and Medals by the Party and the State.
Comrade's passing is a great loss to our Party, State, people and his family. To express condolences and commemorate Comrade General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front have decided to hold a state funeral for Comrade General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

WORK HISTORY
December 1967: He worked as a staff member of the Documentation Department of the Study Magazine (now the Communist Magazine); on December 19, 1967, he was admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam.
August 1968 - August 1973: He was an editor of the Communist Magazine; went on field trips to Thanh Oai district, Ha Tay province (now Hanoi); worked as Secretary of the Communist Magazine Agency's Youth Union.
September 1973 - April 1976: He was a postgraduate student in the Faculty of Economics and Politics at the Nguyen Ai Quoc High-Level Party School (now the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics).
May 1976 - August 1980: He worked as an editor of the Party Building Committee, Communist Magazine, and Deputy Secretary of the Party Cell.
September 1980 - August 1981: He studied Russian at the Nguyen Ai Quoc High-Level Party School.
September 1981 - July 1983: He was an intern and defended his thesis for Associate Professor (now Doctor) in Historical Sciences (majoring in Party Building) at the Academy of Social Sciences of the Soviet Union, under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong's coffin lies at the National Funeral Home No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong, Hanoi.
The funeral of comrade Nguyen Phu Trong will be held at the National Funeral Home No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong, Hanoi, starting from 07:00 to 22:00 on July 25, 2024 and from 07:00 to 13:00 on July 26, 2024.
The memorial service for comrade Nguyen Phu Trong will be held at 1:00 p.m. on July 26, 2024 at the National Funeral Home No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong, Hanoi.
Funeral at 3:00 p.m. the same day at Mai Dich Cemetery, Hanoi city.
The funeral and memorial service for comrade Nguyen Phu Trong will be held at the same time at Thong Nhat Hall, Ho Chi Minh City and at his hometown in Dong Hoi commune, Dong Anh district, Hanoi city.
