Due to the impact of storm No. 3, the output of earthworms in Vinh Cuong commune (Thanh Ha) this year has decreased sharply, causing many households to lose their crops.
According to Mr. Le Van Dat, Secretary of the Party Committee of Vinh Cuong Commune (recently merged from Thanh Cuong and Vinh Lap Communes), this is the "golden" time to harvest rươi, but local farmers are disappointed. Rươi output has decreased sharply compared to previous years, with an average of only 10-20 kg per sao, 60-70 kg/sao lower than previous years, and many households have lost everything.
Although the market price of rươi remains high, ranging from 300,000-320,000 VND/kg, the sharp decrease in productivity has caused the income of people in the rươi area of Vinh Cuong to drop significantly. The main cause is believed to be the impact of storm No. 3 and the flooding after the storm. Floodwaters carrying large amounts of alluvium and mud have filled the rươi holes, hindering the natural development of rươi.
Vinh Cuong Commune is known as the “rươi capital” of Thanh Ha District, with more than 100 households currently participating in exploitation on an area of nearly 56.6 hectares. On average, farmers in the commune earn more than 40 billion VND each year from this specialty.
According to Mr. Dat, in the context of increasingly unpredictable natural disasters, adaptation and finding new directions have become important tasks for specialized areas for growing earthworms.
This crop failure poses a difficult problem for local people and authorities in finding sustainable solutions to minimize the damage. In the coming time, the commune will organize seminars to develop long-term plans to protect the natural habitat of the earthworms, ensuring sustainable livelihoods for farmers.
