A serious medical error at hospitals in Portland, Oregon (USA), may have exposed more than 2,400 patients to dangerous infectious diseases such as hepatitis B, C and HIV.

The incident stemmed from an anesthesiologist who was said to have seriously breached infection control protocols.

According to a statement from the Providence health care system, about 2,200 patients treated at Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center and two patients at Providence Portland Medical Center may have been exposed to the risk of infection.

Officials recommend that all of these people get free blood tests to screen for infectious diseases. If a patient tests positive, Providence will discuss and determine next steps.

This anesthesiologist was employed by the Oregon Anesthesiology Specialists Group and worked at the two Providence medical facilities from 2017-2023.

The person also worked at Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center in Gresham for six months, starting in December 2023. Legacy Health said it is contacting 221 patients who may have been affected.

The anesthesiologist’s identity has not been released, but the Oregon Anesthesiology Group confirmed that it fired him after discovering the violations.

The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) said it is working closely with Legacy Health and Providence Health & Services to investigate the incident. At this time, OHA has no known cases of illness related to this medical error.
