The CDC warns that low vaccination rates and increased cases of respiratory illnesses could lead to severe illness and strain health care systems in the coming weeks and months. The CDC also recommends that health care providers promote the use of antiviral drugs to treat influenza and COVID-19 for those who qualify, especially older adults and those with underlying health conditions.

CDC data over the past 4 weeks have shown alarming increases in hospitalizations, including a 200% increase in flu cases, a 51% increase in COVID-19 cases, and a 60% increase in RSV cases across all age groups. This is due to a significant decline in adult influenza vaccinations, down 7.4 million doses from the 2022-2023 flu season. Only about 16% of people 60 years and older have been vaccinated against RSV, and only 36% of people 65 years and older have been vaccinated against COVID-19 during the 2023-2024 flu season.
