Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on July 28 that Russian military forces had destroyed a drone believed to be from Ukraine heading towards Moscow.
Authorities investigate at the scene of a drone attack in Moscow, Russia, May 30, 2023.
“An enemy drone that was attempting to carry out a night raid was shot down,” Mr. Sobyanin said on his Telegram channel. He affirmed that the incident did not cause any material damage or casualties.
In a later statement, the Russian Defense Ministry said the drone was targeting "locations in the Moscow region" before being neutralized by air defense systems.
This is the second drone attack this week, after a drone crashed into a shopping mall on Likhachev Avenue in Moscow and caused an explosion on July 24. Several drones were also shot down or disabled earlier this month in the southwestern suburbs of the city.
It was the most high-profile attack since two drones struck the Kremlin in May.
Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry also said that a group of 17 UAVs also carried out attacks on the night of July 23 on the Crimean peninsula, an area annexed by Russia in 2014. The governor of Crimea said the drones attacked an ammunition depot and damaged a residential building.
Russian officials have condemned the attacks as “terrorist acts.” Ukraine has yet to respond to the latest drone attack on the Russian capital.
