Mr Birla won against opposition Congress party candidate K Suresh.

Speaking at his inauguration, Mr. Birla affirmed that he would chair and conduct meaningful discussions in the upcoming sessions.

Congratulating Mr. Birla, Prime Minister Modi said that Mr. Birla's position and responsibility will bring inspiration and influence to the newly elected members of the Lok Sabha in the recent general election. Prime Minister Modi also expressed hope for Mr. Birla's governance as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha for the next 5 years.

Opposition Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also congratulated Mr Birla on his re-election as Speaker, stressing that it was important that discussions in the House would have a balanced participation of political parties.

The BJP lost its majority in the lower house of parliament after the recent general election, winning 240 seats, down from 303 in the 2019 election. Therefore, to achieve success in this term, Mr. Modi - who was sworn in as Prime Minister of India for a third consecutive term on June 9 - needs the support of national and state-level political parties.
