From 7:00 a.m. on June 1 (8:30 a.m. Hanoi time), voters in 8 states and territories of India began voting in the 7th and final phase of the general election.
The Election Commission (ECI) said that more than 100 million voters are exercising their right to vote. Among the 904 candidates running this time, public attention is focused on incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi - who is contesting in the Varanasi region. Early in the morning, Prime Minister Modi posted on social network X calling on voters, especially young voters and women, to vote in record numbers to exercise their right to vote.
The vote took place amid a severe heat wave across the country that has killed dozens of people, leading to concerns about voter turnout.
The ECI said 13 special trains and eight helicopter flights have been deployed to ferry security personnel and election officials to over 100,000 polling stations. Besides, the ECI has taken security measures at 201 international border checkpoints and 906 inter-state border checkpoints to prevent the flow of illicit liquor, drugs, cash and gifts.
So far, the ECI has conducted six phases of the general election smoothly, starting from April 19. The results of the vote counting of all seven phases are expected to be conducted and announced on June 4.
