Tan Quang farmers grow moneywort, earning... hundreds of millions/ha

Mr. Vu Dinh Cuong's family in Doan Xa village, Tan Quang commune has been growing the medicinal plant moneywort for 2 years now. Mr. Cuong said that last year he experimented with growing this plant and found it easy to grow, and it also brought high economic efficiency, so this year he expanded the area to 1 hectare. Moneywort is planted in January or February and will be harvested in June. The harvest period lasts until October with 3 harvests, each about 2 months apart. Harvesting moneywort is also simple, just cut it, bring it home, process it, dry it, package it and sell it to a purchasing unit. "Every year I harvest 3 batches, the first batch yields about 80 kg/sao, the second batch from 1-1.2 quintals/sao and the third batch from 1.3-1.4 quintals/sao. After deducting expenses, I can make a profit of about 10 million VND/sao/year," Mr. Cuong shared.

Seeing the effectiveness of Cuong's medicinal plant growing model, this year, Le Thi Van's family also grows moneywort. Although she has only harvested one crop, she has seen the effectiveness of this crop. "There are three harvests a year, the first harvest is considered to compensate for the labor of fertilizing, tilling the land, and buying various fertilizers. The second and third harvests are the profits. I find that growing moneywort is not hard, and the profit is 2-3 times higher than growing rice and some local crops," said Van.

Continue to expand

In 2023, after surveying a number of localities, Hai Duong Pharmaceutical and Medical Supplies Joint Stock Company decided to choose Tan Quang commune to implement the project "Building a model of growing some medicinal plants according to GACP - WHO to serve the production of medicines on an industrial scale in Hai Duong province".

According to Hai Duong Pharmaceutical and Medical Supplies Joint Stock Company, the heavy metal content in the soil here is low, pesticide residues are almost non-existent, and pathogenic microorganisms in irrigation water samples are also non-existent or low, which is favorable for the growth and development of moneywort, and the quality of medicinal herbs is high. During the project implementation, the unit supported 50% of seeds, fertilizers, materials and transferred technology, and purchased all products, so people can rest assured in production.

As soon as the company returned to the locality to raise the issue, the People's Committee of Tan Quang commune assigned the Commune Farmers' Association to propagate and mobilize farmers to participate in implementing the project.

Mr. Vu Dinh Tuan, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Tan Quang Commune, said that in the first year, there was only 1 household participating, but in the second year, there were 3 households. The area also expanded from nearly 11,000 m²up to 18,000 m². In fact, this tree is easy to grow and suitable for local farming conditions, so in the coming time, the association will continue to promote and mobilize farmers to expand the area of ​​planting this tree. It can be included as one of the main crops of the locality.

With the benefits of the moneywort plant, some people in Tan Quang commune and some neighboring communes also intend to grow this plant. Mr. Le Dinh Loi in Xuan Tri village (Tan Quang) said: "After researching, I found that the plant is easy to grow, simple to harvest, and has high economic efficiency, so I also intend to learn from experience to grow it."

With the benefits and suitability of the moneywort plant, it will certainly develop strongly in Tan Quang commune as well as some neighboring communes in the coming time.
