Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, 57 years old, was accused of repeatedly hitting, slapping, and shaking a baby boy over a month old while taking care of him.
On December 27, Ms. Lan was temporarily detained by Cau Giay District Police for torturing others.
The incident was discovered by a 35-year-old woman in Nghia Do Ward, Cau Giay District (the boy’s mother) on December 14, when she reviewed the security camera at home. She discovered that Ms. Lan slapped her son hard, shook him from side to side, and threw him on the bed. She immediately fired Ms. Lan.
After reviewing the camera footage from the previous days, the mother was heartbroken to discover that this woman had repeatedly slapped, shook, pinched her ear, and thrown her child onto the bed. Many days, she left the child to cry.
The victim’s mother said the family was “shocked” when they reviewed Ms. Lan’s actions. Since giving birth, her health has been poor and she had to hire a maid. There was a surveillance camera installed in the room, but every time she hit the child, Ms. Lan turned her back to avoid the camera angle.
The family took the baby to the National Children's Hospital for examination but found no unusual signs.
"The doctor said the baby is still too young so he needs to monitor himself at home to detect post-concussion syndrome, also known as shaken baby syndrome," the mother said.
