Schools in 18 provinces and cities lost nearly 41,600 sets of textbooks due to storm No. 3, with total damage to facilities and equipment estimated at about VND1,260 billion.
The Ministry of Education and Training announced the above news on September 17. Regarding textbooks, Yen Bai province suffered the most damage, losing nearly 28,700 sets of books, followed by Cao Bang with more than 7,400.
As for Lao Cai province, the authorities are still summarizing. This is one of the provinces that suffered heavy damage to people and property due to the impact of storm No. 3.
The Ministry of Education and Training said it has directed publishers to prepare and be ready to supply textbooks to localities affected by the storm so that learning is not interrupted. The ministry also called on publishers, organizations and individuals to sponsor textbooks for students.
Under the new general education program, the country currently has three sets of textbooks, compiled by many groups of authors. Most schools choose books from several sets.
Regarding infrastructure, the education sector of 18 provinces and cities estimated damage of more than 514.7 billion VND; teaching equipment of more than 745.8 billion VND. Of which, the preschool sector suffered the most damage.
At the conference on overcoming the consequences of storm No. 3 chaired by the Prime Minister on September 15, the Minister of Education and Training assessed that the damage to the education sector was enormous.
The 17 schools that cannot be restored are all in Lao Cai and Yen Bai provinces. Mr. Son proposed that the central budget support temporary schools to build temporary schools first, then have funds to rebuild. The other 99 schools have not yet determined when they will reopen to receive students in person.
Storm No. 3 also killed 52 students, children and 3 teachers; a number of students and teachers were missing or injured.
In addition, the ministry noted that many students are facing difficulties due to their families suffering heavy losses. The ministry suggested that universities prioritize allocating resources to exempt tuition fees and have financial support policies suitable for each student; and provide guidance for students to borrow capital.
