The pawn shop owner was shocked to discover that the 144 phones the woman brought to pawn were just replica phones.
On March 4, the Hanoi People's Court sentenced defendant Ngo Thi Xiem (born in 1973, in Dong Da) to 16 years in prison for fraud and property appropriation.
According to the accusation, due to needing money for personal expenses, Ms. Xiem provided false information introducing herself as having relationships with individuals working at the customs department of Noi Bai International Airport, being able to buy Iphone brand mobile phones at cheap prices and having a batch of unsold phones that needed to be pawned to borrow money and then appropriated.
With the above tricks, since August 2019, Ms. Xiem has appropriated more than 3 billion VND from gullible people. Ms. Xiem's victim is Mr. K. (born in 1986, in Chuong My) who works in the pawn service business. In 2019, Ms. Xiem often went to Mr. K.'s store to pawn his property.
From July to August 2019, Ms. Xiem repeatedly brought 144 SX Max brand phones to pawn to Mr. K. to borrow money, but when pawning, the defendant told Mr. K. that the phones still had the original seal so they could not be removed, because it would lose value.
Because all the phone boxes still had the warranty stamps intact, Mr. K. believed that the phones were real and did not open them to check. In September 2019, after repeatedly urging Ms. Xiem to pay and take the phones back without success, Mr. K. opened the two phone boxes to check and discovered that they were just mock phones.
Unable to contact Ms. Xiem, Mr. K. later filed a complaint against the defendant and handed over 144 phones that she had pawned.
Investigation results showed that Ms. Xiem also introduced to Mr. K. that she had a relationship with someone working at the immigration department of Noi Bai airport, had Iphone SX Max phones priced at 20 million VND/unit, cheaper than the market price, the source of goods was at the airport's liquidation warehouse, Mr. K. agreed and gave money to order the phone, but then Mr. K. did not receive the phone...
The indictment determined that from July to September 2019, Ms. Ngo Thi Xiem appropriated 2.8 billion VND from Mr. K. Also using deceitful means, promising to buy cheap phones, the defendant also appropriated 260 million VND from another person.
