A Houthi spokesman said the force attacked the Strinda tanker, which was carrying oil to Israel.

However, Mowinckel Chemical Tankers AS, the owner of the Strinda, confirmed that the ship was carrying raw materials for biofuel production and was on a voyage from Malaysia to Venice (Italy).

The attack occurred as the Strinda passed through the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait between Yemen and northeastern Africa, leading to the Red Sea - a vital shipping route to the Suez Canal and the port of Eilat in northern Israel.

The 144-meter-long Strinda, built in 2006, flies the Norwegian flag and is owned by Mowinckel Chemical Tankers AS, based in Bergen, Norway. The company's chairman, Geir Belsnes, said the crew consisted of 22 people, all of whom were Indian nationals. The attack set the ship on fire, but the crew managed to contain the fire and no one was injured. The Strinda is now heading to a safe port.

After the conflict between Israel and the armed Islamic movement Hamas broke out on October 7, the Houthi forces announced that they would attack all ships heading to Israel, regardless of their nationality, and warned international shipping companies not to trade with Israeli ports.
