Lao media reported on August 20 that the Golden Triangle Economic Zone Security Force in Bokeo province (Northern Laos) recently coordinated with a number of functional units to successfully dismantle an online fraud gang (Call Center), arresting 771 subjects.
The arrested subjects included both men and women from 15 countries, including Asian and African countries. Lao authorities also seized many related exhibits, including 709 desktop computers, 28 laptops, 1,896 mobile phones, 2 iPads and 10 USBs.
For the arrested Laotians, the authorities have prepared a file and assigned relatives to sign a guarantee to bring them back to their localities. The Chinese nationals have been handed over to the Chinese authorities, and the remaining Laotians have been handed over to the embassies of their countries.
This crackdown on an online fraud gang in the Golden Triangle Economic Zone aims to address transnational crime in the Golden Triangle Economic Zone, maintain social order and security, and not allow illegal businesses to operate in Lao territory.
Also in August 2024, the police forces of Vietnam and Laos coordinated with functional forces to successfully dismantle a criminal organization operating in human trafficking and online fraud on an exceptionally large scale, arresting 155 subjects operating in the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone.
