Due to the impact of the pandemic, many top US universities such as Yale, CalTech Institute of Technology... have allowed candidates to submit Duolingo certificates to prove their English proficiency.

The Duolingo English Test is a modern English proficiency test for students and organizations, conducted entirely online at a cost of ⅕ that of IELTS. The test scores are assessed on 4 skills: Literacy (reading, writing ability), Comprehension (listening, reading ability), Conversation (speaking, listening ability) and Production (writing, speaking ability).

Candidates take the test over a period of 1 hour and receive their results within 48 hours. Scores are calculated on a scale of 10 to 160 and include a general description of the candidate's ability.

The certificate is valid for 2 years and is accepted by many universities around the world as a replacement for common English certificates such as IELTS and TOEFL. A score of 120-160 on the Duolingo certificate can be equivalent to 7.5-9.0 IELTS and 97-120 TOEFL points.

According to Duolingo data, about 1,415 schools in the US accept the Duolingo English test. Schools have their own regulations when submitting this certificate. In addition, the certificate is also recognized at many universities around the world.
