Communicating with foreigners from the age of 4

After the last class of the morning of September 17 at Marie Curie II Secondary and High School, Dam Chi Dung stayed in class to discuss English homework with his friends. Dung enthusiastically explained the meanings of many new words and some grammar structures that his friends did not fully understand.

Dung said he started learning English when he was 3 years old through English cartoons and comics. At kindergarten, he had a lot of contact with foreign teachers. At the age of 4, he started to enjoy English and could communicate simply with his foreign teacher. In his final year of kindergarten, he enjoyed watching more bilingual videos in Vietnamese and English and reading more stories in English.

From the middle of grade 1, Dung's parents hired a private English teacher to tutor him at home. Around the middle of grade 1, Dung studied for the Movers Cambridge exam and achieved a perfect score of 15 shields for the Movers certificate in grade 2. Also in grade 2, Dung continued to achieve a perfect score of 15 shields for the Flyers Cambridge certificate.

In grade 3, Dung continued to test himself at a higher level with the Ket and Pet Cambridge English certificate exams. With a solid English foundation, in grade 4 Dung focused on IELTS preparation. From grade 4 to grade 5, he actively accumulated knowledge from teachers at school, studied at many English centers in Hai Duong city and practiced and tested himself with many online IELTS tests. In particular, he also self-studied many advanced IELTS preparation books such as: IELTS Express, Mindset for IELTS... After a period of hard study, in August 2024, he achieved IELTS 8.0 on his first attempt.

Dung's IELTS 8.0 certificate

“When I received the news that I got 8.0 IELTS, I was very happy because I proved myself and repaid my parents' hard work,” Dung said.

Sharing the secret to learning English well, Dung said that vocabulary is the key to unlocking the exam. But to remember vocabulary deeply and for a long time, you need to understand the meaning of each word, and at the same time immediately relate it to phenomena in life. With listening skills, practice by watching many videos with English subtitles in parallel with listening to English music and doing exercises.

For reading, read a lot of books, especially foreign books and stories in English. These books and stories have a lot of difficult vocabulary but the content is attractive. The more you think about the connection and deep meaning of each sentence, the more interested you will be in reading English texts.

To practice speaking well, Dung takes advantage of opportunities to practice with teachers or chat with friends. Thanks to that, he has the ability to respond to listening, speaking and increase his vocabulary naturally. Similarly, with the writing part, he learns the structure and grammar firmly, and at the same time arranges the ideas and main points of the paragraphs reasonably...

According to Dung, to learn English well, you need passion, diligence, and a specific daily study plan and goal. In addition to studying with teachers, the most important thing is self-study skills, self-research to remember longer. In particular, regularly self-test and find weaknesses to correct mistakes. And finally, good thinking, quick reflexes, rich social background knowledge along with confidence and comfort will help you conquer the 4 IELTS skill tests well.

Continue to conquer IELTS 9.0

Dung said: “My upcoming goal in 4 years of secondary school is IELTS 9.0. I hope that a learning environment with spacious facilities, good teachers, especially a good English learning environment like Marie Curie II Secondary and High School will help me achieve this goal.”

The family had oriented their son to learn English from a young age, but did not set the top goal of learning English to study abroad. "My wife and I will continue to accompany our son to conquer new heights," said Mr. La.
