In South Kordofan state, shelling of the capital Kadugli killed at least 40 people and wounded 70. The city, which is controlled by the Sudanese army, was the target of an attack that Governor Mohamed Ibrahim said was linked to an offshoot of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), led by leader Abdel Aziz al-Hilu.

The SPLM-N movement has been engaged in numerous clashes with both the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in various areas of South Kordofan for a long time.

The attacks in South Kordofan come amid continuing heavy fighting between the army and RSF in Khartoum. On February 1, at least 60 people were killed and more than 150 injured when RSF shelled a crowded market in Omdurman, a suburb of Khartoum.

Sudan has been in conflict since April 2023, when army commanders and the RSF rejected annexation plans and began fighting for control of the territory. The conflict in Sudan has fueled the world’s largest displacement crisis, with more than 14 million people displaced internally or seeking refuge in neighboring countries. More than 24,000 people are estimated to have died as a result of the conflict.
