Sudanese media reported that the dam burst due to heavy rains caused flooding, destroying nearby villages and complicating rescue efforts.
On August 26 (local time), local Sudanese officials announced that the Arbaatt Dam in eastern Sudan collapsed on August 25, causing severe flooding that killed at least 60 people and hundreds of others are still missing.
The dam burst devastated villages near Port Sudan, the state capital, Omer Issa Tahir, director of the Red Sea State Water Company, added.
The official stressed the need for urgent intervention by rescue forces in the area with the top priority being to reach and evacuate people trapped at high points due to flooding.

The dam, located about 20km north of the port city of Port Sudan, has a reservoir capacity of 25 million cubic metres of water and is one of the city's main water supplies.
