Over 120 people were killed in Al-Jazira state (central Sudan) in a recent attack by the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim said RSF carried out a massacre against residents of al-Sariha village in Al-Jazira state, killing 124 people and injuring more than 200 after besieging the village on October 25. He said the Sudanese Ministry of Health was working to provide emergency medical care and treatment to the injured and sick in the besieged areas.

The head of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Catherine Russell expressed concern about the increasing violence against children and families in Al-Jazira state. According to UNICEF, in the past week, at least 124 people were killed in Al-Jazira, including 10 children, and at least 43 others were injured.

Sudan, one of the world's poorest countries, has been a battlefield since April 2023 in a conflict between the RSF paramilitary force, led by General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo, and the army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane. The conflict has left tens of thousands of people dead.

Paramilitary forces have recently stepped up violence against civilians in the agricultural state of Al-Jazira, south of the capital Khartoum, after their commander in the area defected to the army.

The Sudan Doctors’ Union on October 25 called on the United Nations to press for safe humanitarian access to villages. The organization added that rescue operations had become impossible and the military was unable to protect civilians. According to medical sources in some villages, almost all medical facilities capable of receiving emergency cases had been forced to close.
