Non-governmental groups in Sudan say at least 50 people were killed in an October 25 attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on villages in the country's al-Jazira state.

The attack comes amid a recent escalation of violence against civilians by RSF paramilitaries in al-Jazira state following the defection of a commander.

According to the Resistance Committee in Hasaheisa district, the two villages of Al-Sariha and Azaq were attacked since the morning of October 25. In Al-Sariha village alone, 50 people were killed and more than 200 were injured.

The committee said it was impossible to evacuate the wounded from the village due to continuous shelling and sniper fire from the RSF. Communications were also cut off, making it impossible to get an accurate estimate of the new casualties.

Meanwhile, the nearby village of Azraq was also completely surrounded and suffered similar attacks.

On the same day, the Sudan Doctors' Union called on the United Nations to press for safe humanitarian corridors to villages facing attacks by the RSF, which has been fighting the Sudanese regular army since April last year.

The organization said rescue operations had become "impossible" and the military was unable to protect all civilians.
