German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is not worried about the future of NATO despite the new US President's negative comments about the military alliance.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius recently said that Europe now has greater responsibility than ever for the continent's security, regardless of changes in US politics.
Mr. Pistorius' statement was made in an interview with the DW media group during his visit to Lithuania in the first week after US President Donald Trump took office for a second term.
Asked whether his trip to Lithuania was part of a new strategy by Berlin to show the US leader that Germany and Europe are taking the initiative on defence issues, Pistorius said it was not a new strategy.
“Since taking office in January 2023, I have worked hard to make clear that we should not just look to the White House and whoever is the next President of the United States, but that we must take matters into our own hands,” he said.
The head of the German Defense Ministry also said he was not worried about the future of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), although the new US President had previously made negative statements about the military alliance.
