One day after being sworn in for his second term, US President Donald Trump announced that he would impose tariffs on goods from the European Union (EU), while warning of the possibility of imposing an additional 10% tax on imported goods from China as early as February 1.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on January 21 local time, President Trump said it was necessary to adjust the trade imbalance between the US and the EU.

He also addressed the issue of fentanyl trafficking in China and warned of an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods due to illegal fentanyl trafficking into the United States.

Fentanyl is 50 times more potent than heroin and is believed to be responsible for devastating thousands of American homes each year. Asked when tariffs on Chinese goods would begin, Trump said: “Probably February 1st is something we’re looking at.”

For imported goods from two neighboring countries, Mexico and Canada, Mr. Trump reiterated the warning that he could impose a 25% tariff, citing the reason that these two countries have not effectively prevented illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking into the US.

According to official trade data, China, Canada and Mexico are the largest trading partners of the United States.

The new US President also mentioned the possibility of imposing sanctions on Russia if President Vladimir Putin refuses to negotiate an end to the conflict in Ukraine. However, Mr. Trump did not give details about the new sanctions that might be considered.

The comments come as President Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to study key trade issues, including trade deficits, unfair competition and currency manipulation. These investigations could pave the way for further tariffs in the future.
