Passenger bus crashes head-on into tractor-trailer in Mexico, killing more than 30 people

On the morning of February 8 (local time), a tragic traffic accident between a passenger bus and a tractor-trailer in the southern Mexican state of Tabasco killed more than 30 people.

This is the deadliest accident in this Latin American country in the past two years.

The accident occurred at around 2:00 a.m. on the Escárcega-Villahermosa highway when the large passenger vehicle was traveling from Cancun (Quintana Roo state) to Comalcalco (Tabasco state).

At about Km 100, the passenger car crashed head-on into a tractor-trailer moving in the opposite direction.

The collision occurred while the two vehicles were moving at high speed, causing the front of both vehicles to be severely deformed and burst into flames.

Local authorities immediately mobilized functional forces to the scene to carry out fire extinguishing, rescue, and take the injured to the nearest medical facility.

The passenger manifest of Tours Acosta - the company operating the crashed bus - recorded that there were about 44 passengers on board.

According to initial information, more than 30 people were killed at the scene and 10 people were injured in critical condition.

Preliminary investigation results show that the accident most likely occurred because the tractor-trailer encroached into the oncoming lane while moving.

Meanwhile, Comalcalco Mayor Ovidio Peralta said the government has asked local authorities to mobilize all necessary resources to rescue the injured, conduct forensic procedures on the deceased victims and investigate the cause of the tragic accident.
