On New Year's Eve, Thanh argued with his 'common-law wife' about leaving wine offerings outside the fence. Thanh punched his 'common-law wife', causing her death.
On the afternoon of February 1, the leader of the People's Committee of Phu Loc commune (Can Loc, Ha Tinh) said that in the area, an incident occurred where a man punched his "mistress" to death.
Specifically, at around 11:55 p.m. on January 28 (New Year's Eve), Mai Van Thanh (born in 1981, residing in Thuong Ha village, Phu Loc commune) returned home in Thuong Ha village and saw Ms. Nguyen Thi H. (born in 1981, residing in Nghe An province) leaving the wine offerings outside the fence.
Thanh angrily asked Ms. H. "Why didn't you leave the wine on the altar but outside the fence?". Seeing Thanh's loud voice, Ms. H. was scared and ran out into the street, but Thanh chased after her and punched her in the head.
Discovering the incident, a group of young men who were lighting a campfire nearby ran over to stop it. Ms. H. ran a short distance and collapsed on the road. She was taken home by locals in a poor health condition.
At around 8:30 a.m. on January 29 (the first day of Tet), Ms. H. developed symptoms of headache, vomiting and died at home.
Upon receiving the report, the Criminal Police Department of Ha Tinh Provincial Police coordinated with Can Loc District Police to investigate and clarify the case.
Mai Van Thanh was then detained by the police for intentionally causing injury leading to death.
According to the leader of Phu Loc Commune People's Committee, Thanh and Ms. H. lived together as husband and wife but had not registered their marriage.
The case is under investigation and clarification.
