Users can use ChatGPT without registering an account, but cannot review chat history.
The new method, announced by OpenAI on April 1, is only available on the web version, not yet available on the mobile app. When accessing the ChatGPT website, users can use it immediately without having to log in to an account as before.
“We are rolling out this feature with the intention of making it accessible to anyone curious about the possibilities of AI,” OpenAI said in a statement.
This free version of ChatGPT uses the GPT3.5 model, which only works with text conversations. Since anyone can use it, OpenAI says it will have additional safeguards in place, such as blocking certain commands, but it hasn't specified which ones.
The use of no account is expected to make it easier for people to access ChatGPT. When the service first launched in late 2022, many users in countries like Vietnam had difficulty registering, even having to spend hundreds of thousands of VND to buy an account.
The company also recommends that users create accounts to experience more features, such as storing conversation history and giving voice commands. By default, developers can also use information that users enter to improve their large language model, but this can be turned off in the settings.
OpenAI says its service is now used by more than 100 million people across 185 countries every week. According to SimilarWeb, the service had an estimated 1.6 billion total visitors in February, making it the most visited AI chatbot website.
