OpenAI fires the “father” of ChatGPT

Mr. Altman, 38, became a phenomenon in the technology world after launching ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot with unprecedented capabilities, generating content at a human-level, such as writing poetry or composing works of art in just seconds.

He is one of the most vocal advocates of artificial intelligence, but has also been a leading advocate for regulation and has warned that the technology poses risks as it reshapes society. He testified before the US Congress in May 2023 about what form AI laws should take.

OpenAI's board of directors said the decision to fire Mr. Altman came after “a thoughtful process” and concluded: “The board no longer has confidence in Mr. Altman's ability to continue to lead OpenAI.”

The statement also said the board is “grateful for Mr. Altman’s contributions to the founding and growth of OpenAI. We believe new leadership is needed as we move forward.”

ChatGPT's launch has sparked an AI race, with competitors including tech giants Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Meta.
Shares of Microsoft, a key business partner of OpenAI, continued to fall in trading on November 17, following news of Mr. Altman's departure.

Microsoft said the CEO change will not affect its relationship with OpenAI.
Microsoft has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI and incorporated the company's technology into its products, including its Bing search engine.

Mr. Altman will now be replaced on an interim basis by OpenAI Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati.
