Three hybrid car models have just been launched in the Vietnamese market in early 2025

KIA Carnival HEV, Jeacoo J7 and DongFeng HUGE are the latest names using hybrid gasoline engines to enter the Vietnamese market right before Lunar New Year 2025.

KIA Carnival 1.6 Turbo HEV

Hybrid gasoline-electric vehicles are increasingly attracting Vietnamese customers because of their advantages in terms of operation and fuel economy. According to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), hybrid vehicle sales in 2024 will reach approximately 10,000 units, accounting for about 4.5% of total passenger cars sold on the market and are expected to increase rapidly in the next few years.

Right in the first days of 2025, there were at least 3 new hybrid models entering the Vietnamese market, mainly in the high-chassis vehicle group, including both conventional hybrid vehicles (HEV) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV).

KIA Carnival 1.6 Turbo HEV

THACO-KIA has just added a hybrid version to its best-selling large MPV model, the Carnival, priced at VND1.849 billion. These Carnival Turbo HEV Signature 7S cars are expected to be delivered to customers before the upcoming Lunar New Year.

The most outstanding feature of the KIA Carnival compared to previous versions is the use of a 1.6L turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor and a 1.49kWh battery, for a total capacity of 242 horsepower and 569Nm of torque. This version has an additional regenerative braking feature. According to the announcement, the fuel consumption of this version is 4.95 liters/100km of mixed road - quite impressive for a large car.

In terms of appearance, the KIA Carnival HEV is similar to the 7-seat Signature diesel version. Some differences are the addition of the HEV logo and 19-inch rims with 3D patterns. This version is also equipped with additional air vents under the front bumper that can open and close automatically according to operating conditions, helping to increase aerodynamic efficiency and save fuel.

According to VAMA's report, in 2024, a total of 6,560 Carnivals were sold on the market, leading the large MPV segment. With the addition of the hybrid version, KIA Carnival in Vietnam currently has 5 versions with prices ranging from 1.299 to 1.849 billion VND.

DongFeng Huge

Huge is the largest model in the group of 4 cars that Chinese car manufacturer DongFeng has just introduced to the Vietnamese market in early January 2025. DongFeng Huge belongs to the D-size SUV/crossover segment, in the same "tray" as Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Everest, Mazda CX-8 or KIA Sorento but only has a 5-seat configuration and only 1 HEV Premium H2 version priced up to 1.029 billion VND.

The most notable feature of the Chinese car is the 1.5L hybrid engine combined with an electric motor for 241 horsepower, 540Nm torque and front-wheel drive, accompanied by a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. According to the announcement, Huge's fuel consumption according to WLTC standards is 5.8 l/100km.

In terms of appearance, Huge has a square SUV style with angular, masculine design. Huge has dimensions of Length x Width x Height of 4,720 x 1,910 x 1,702 (mm) and a wheelbase of 2,825mm. Although the size is not larger than competitors such as Hyundai Santa Fe or KIA Sorento, Huge's wheelbase is superior to provide a spacious interior.

Jaecoo J7 PHEV

Jaecoo J7 PHEV

Jeacoo J7 PHEV is the newest name that just entered the Vietnamese market on the evening of January 15 by Omoda & Jaecoo - a subsidiary brand of Chery Group. Jeacoo J7 is imported from China, belonging to the C-size high-chassis segment with competitors Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson,... Different from the HEV models above, J7 PHEV is a plug-in hybrid model.

Thus, J7 is the first model in the C-size crossover segment in Vietnam to use plug-in hybrid technology, including a 1.5 TDGI gasoline engine with a capacity of 141 horsepower, 215Nm torque, combined with a 201 horsepower, 310Nm electric motor. The car uses a DHT continuously variable transmission specifically for hybrid cars.

"Feeding" the electric motor is an 18.3 kWh battery pack. According to the announcement, when activating pure EV mode, the J7 PHEV has an operating range of 106km. Combining both a gasoline engine with a full tank of gas and a fully charged battery, the J7 PHEV can travel over 1,300km, according to the manufacturer's test results.

In addition to the J7 PHEV, Omoda & Jaecoo also introduced the J7 internal combustion engine version with almost identical appearance and equipment. The J7 uses a 1.6L turbocharged gasoline engine, producing 183 horsepower and 275 Nm of maximum torque. 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The selling price of the J7 (pure gasoline) and J7 PHEV is 799 and 999 million VND respectively.
