Murder after drinking and gambling

The court sentenced defendant Pham Viet Luong to 16 years in prison.

At about 6:00 p.m. on February 2, 2022, Viet Luong, his younger brother Pham Viet Cuong (born in 2004, in Mep village) and Nguyen Dinh Dien (born in 1990, residing in Binh Lang commune), Nguyen Ngoc Tien (born in 1985, in Chi Minh commune) went to the house of Nguyen Dinh Duc (born in 1987, residing in Minh Duc commune, Tu Ky district) to celebrate Tet and eat rice and drink wine.

About an hour and a half later, Viet Luong, Cuong, and Dien decided to gamble for money. A little later, Nguyen Van Luong (born in 1981, from Minh Duc commune) came to drink with Tien and the homeowner. After that, Van Luong and Tien sat down at the gambling table. At 8:15 p.m., everyone stopped gambling and went to wish each other a happy new year.

At 9 p.m. the same day, Mr. Van Luong thought he had been cheated while gambling and lost, so he returned to Mr. Duc's house to talk. Mr. Duc immediately called Viet Luong and some others to return to his house. There, Mr. Van Luong said: "You guys cheated me", Viet Luong said: "It's fun to play in the spring, no one cheated me". The two sides exchanged words, Mr. Van Luong cursed and slapped Viet Luong.

Seeing his brother being beaten, Cuong rushed in to punch Van Luong. Viet Luong also rushed in to beat him but was stopped by everyone. Van Luong continued to stand outside the gate and curse Viet Luong and Cuong. Angry at being slapped and cursed, Viet Luong ran into Duc's kitchen and took a pair of scissors to stab Van Luong in the upper left rib, causing him to die on the way to the emergency room. After being stopped by everyone, Viet Luong returned home and then went to Tu Ky District Police to surrender.

At the end of the trial, the court sentenced defendant Pham Viet Luong to 16 years in prison. As for Mr. Cuong, who participated in beating Mr. Van Luong, it was found that he did not affect social order and safety, so he was administratively punished for intentionally causing injury.

In addition, Viet Luong and his brothers: Cuong, Tien, Dien were administratively fined for gambling. As for Mr. Duc, the homeowner did not agree and asked everyone to stop gambling, so the authorities did not raise the issue of handling.
