The Ho Chi Minh City University of Education's specialized competency assessment exam has 6 independent tests: mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, literature, and English. The mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology tests have a time limit of 90 minutes, consisting of 50 questions, of which 35 are multiple choice questions with four options and 15 are short answer questions. The literature test has 20 multiple choice questions with four options and a social essay, with a time limit of 90 minutes. The English test alone has a time limit of 180 minutes with four parts: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Candidates can register for one or more exams, depending on their needs and admission combinations. Candidates take the exam on computers at the exam locations specified by the school.

This year, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education will reserve 40% of its total enrollment quota for admission by combining competency assessment test scores and high school academic results, double that of last year.
Other schools have not yet announced specific quotas for the competency assessment test scores. However, these schools have previously agreed to recognize and use the competency assessment test scores organized by Hanoi National University of Education for admission consideration.
To date, 10 higher education institutions have announced to organize their own entrance exams, including: Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hanoi University of Education, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, Vietnam-Germany University, Saigon University, Ho Chi Minh City Banking University and schools under the Ministry of Public Security.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, in 2022, schools will reserve more than 30,000 admission quotas based on scores from competency and thinking assessment exams. The admission rate by this method accounts for about 2% of the total number of candidates admitted by all methods.
