How will the 4 flight attendants be investigated?

Investigators searched the homes of four Vietnam Airlines flight attendants, took statements from many people, and collected evidence related to their bringing 11.4 kg of drugs from France.

On March 20, after chief flight attendant Nguyen Thanh Thuy, 37 years old; Vo Tu Quynh; Tran Thi Thu Ngan and Dang Phuong Van were detained, the police searched their residences but found no more drugs. The flight attendants confessed to having carried hand-carried goods from France to Vietnam through a colleague working for the same airline.

Through this person, one of the four flight attendants discussed and agreed on wages and divided the "toothpaste" shipment weighing tens of kilograms to Tan Son Nhat. The authorities also worked with the person who introduced the source of goods for the four flight attendants to bring back to the country. Initially, all flight attendants involved were only able to provide text messages exchanging and agreeing on prices with the "delivery person" in France, with the content that they were paid more than 10 million VND.

According to a leader of the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department, the discovery of four flight attendants carrying drugs into the country "was not a coincidence". "Based on intelligence information, customs control operations; based on suspicious signs about the route, key subjects, and information collection results, the Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department directed the case to be solved," he said.

On the morning of March 16, when flight VN10 from France landed at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, customs officers searched the luggage of four flight attendants. In Thuy and Quynh's suitcases, there were 31 boxes of toothpaste containing ecstasy, weighing a total of 2.18 kg; 12 boxes containing ketamine (tray drug, the most expensive type) weighing about 1 kg; Ngan's luggage contained 780 grams of ecstasy; Van's luggage contained more than 2 kg of ecstasy, 2 kg of ketamine and cocaine.

Tan Son Nhat International Airport Customs Branch then sent a dispatch requesting the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department (PC04) of Ho Chi Minh City Police to receive the investigation and handle it according to their authority.

Currently, the case has not been prosecuted, the flight attendants are being asked to cooperate to serve the investigation but have not been prosecuted and have not been applied preventive measures. However, in the next few days, according to the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code, the prosecuting agency will have to prosecute the case (Article 143) and prosecute the accused (Article 179) for investigation.

According to lawyer Vo Dan Mach (Ho Chi Minh City Bar Association), based on current documents, facts and testimonies, it shows that the flight attendants "did not know that the goods they were transporting were drugs". If they have evidence and documents proving that they did not know, did not intentionally carry out the act of illegally transporting drugs... then according to the principle of presumption of innocence, they did not commit a crime.

The investigation agency will examine the traces and actions of the 4 flight attendants and related individuals; as well as collect documents, evidence, and verify logical or contradictory details in the case. If the flight attendants believe that they did not commit the act of illegally transporting drugs, they must confess and clarify some information related to the process of contacting to receive and transport the goods.

Specifically, the flight attendants must declare: who is the sender? Who among them contacted the sender? When did they contact to send the goods (before the flight to France, in France or at another time?); the relationship between the 4 flight attendants and the sender (how did they know each other? what was the form of contact with each other?); the process of contact and information exchange (retrieved from text message history, calls, emails, other contact channels); information of the sender in France and information of the recipient in Vietnam; what is the basis for the flight attendants to be completely confident that the goods are not prohibited and can be easily brought into Vietnam upon entry?...

"If during the investigation, verification, and confession process, the investigating agency finds that these details are well-founded and determines that professional criminals took advantage of flight attendants to send goods, the flight attendants may not be prosecuted, or their responsibility may be considered light," said lawyer Mach.

In addition, it is also possible that one of the four flight attendants was the one who actively transported the drugs. This person knew clearly the amount of drugs to be transported and deliberately took advantage of the trust within the flight crew to share the transportation to Vietnam more easily than transporting a large amount himself.

"Among the flight attendants, some are too young, so it is not impossible that they were approached and taken advantage of by professional drug criminals. No one would risk their lives for such a small amount of money," said Mr. Mach. Therefore, one of the details that needs to be clarified is to look at the history of previous flights, whether these flight attendants brought back goods, what kind, and how was their history screened?...
