The sports industry aims to win 12-15 places to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics, which will officially start next July.

In addition to the 5 official slots of athletes Nguyen Huy Hoang (swimming), Nguyen Thi That (cycling), Trinh Thu Vinh, Le Thi Mong Tuyen (shooting), Vo Thi Kim Anh (boxing), Vietnam is placing its hopes on badminton, weightlifting, gymnastics, Taekwondo, shooting...

The sports industry is creating the best conditions for athletes to practice and train to improve their performance to achieve the best results at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

On the occasion of the 78th anniversary of Vietnam Sports Day (March 27, 1946 - March 27, 2024), Director of the Department of Physical Training and Sports (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) Dang Ha Viet gave an interview about preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

- The Politburo has issued Conclusion No. 70-KL/TW on the development of physical education and sports in the new period. Is this considered a driving force to strengthen the sports industry on the threshold of the Paris Olympics, sir?

-Conclusion 70-KL/TW of the Politburo summarized the 10-year implementation of Resolution No. 08-NQ/TW dated December 1, 2011 on strengthening the Party's leadership, creating strong development in physical education and sports by 2020 of the Politburo, in which, highly appreciated the development of physical education and sports, as well as a number of related policies for athletes and people in physical education and sports practice.

The assessment concluded that the field of physical education and sports has not really received much attention, and the level of investment in sports is still low. Thereby, it raises the requirement to improve policies for athletes related to issues such as: training, health care, housing, etc.

These are positive signs that help implement strategies; are encouraging information for sports people and athletes to have more motivation to contribute to the Fatherland; especially in the immediate period of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

- Sir, what policies has the management agency had to encourage and support athletes in their journey to find a place at the Olympics this time?

-To encourage athletes, the Vietnam Olympic Committee and its partners have announced the reward for each medal won at the Olympics.

Specifically, the gold medal will be awarded 1 million USD, the silver medal 500,000 USD, the bronze medal 200,000 USD. This is a great motivation for the sports industry for athletes on the way to conquering precious medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In 2024, in addition to the Paris Olympics, Vietnamese sports will also have many tournaments at the regional, continental and world levels.

Therefore, the Vietnam Olympic Committee and the Department of Physical Training and Sports closely coordinate with localities, as well as federations and associations, to seek financial resources to ensure that athletes are able to train and compete in all tournaments around the world.

The Department of Physical Training and Sports coordinates with federations and associations to reward athletes, helping them make more efforts in their journey to find a place to attend the Olympics.

In particular, if boxing athletes qualify, they will be awarded 50 million VND; Taekwondo athletes will be awarded 100 million VND; shooting athletes will be awarded 50 million VND...

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has issued a Decision to apply a special nutritional regimen for coaches and athletes of national sports teams preparing to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympic qualifiers.

Accordingly, 89 people, including 65 athletes from the teams, will receive a special nutritional regime of VND 640,000/person/day when training at the National Sports Training Centers and Bac Ninh University of Physical Education and Sports from February 1, 2024.

- Which sports does the sports industry expect to have a high chance of winning tickets to the Olympics, sir?

-The sports industry has placed its hopes on 14 sports where athletes are likely to qualify for the Olympics.

Including 3 basic Olympic sports (athletics, swimming, gymnastics), power sports (cycling, weightlifting, rowing, canoeing), precision sports (shooting, archery), three martial arts (boxing, Judo, Taekwondo), two net fighting sports (table tennis, badminton).

- Is the reason why Vietnamese sports set a lower goal at this Olympics because we are worried about the unsatisfactory results from the 19th ASIAD, sir?

-To train an athlete to compete and achieve success in major arenas such as ASIAD and Olympics, in addition to the athlete's talent and ability, a scientific and systematic training process is also required. This investment period can be up to more than 10 years.

Athlete Nguyen Thi That (An Giang) won a gold medal in the women's scoring event (competition distance 21 laps x 1.48km) of the 37th National Road Cycling Championship 2023

Therefore, the performance indicators at this stage are the result of the athlete training process more than 10 years ago. All performance indicators for athletes before each important tournament are based on scientific basis, based on the assessment of opponents, as well as the ability of the athletes to produce those figures.

- What lessons have we learned for the journey to the 2024 Olympics, sir?

-In 2023, the Department of Sports and Physical Training organized a conference "Raising the ASIAD and Olympic aspirations", which included solutions to existing problems and limitations of Vietnamese sports; helping athletes aim to achieve results in the ASIAD and Olympic arenas...

Institutional and policy issues in Conclusion No. 70-KL/TW of the Politburo are being gradually built and perfected by the sports sector through organizing conferences and seminars.

Recently, the Department of Sports and Physical Training in collaboration with the French Embassy in Vietnam organized a workshop "Responding to the 2024 Paris Olympics" with the participation and contributions of experts in exercise science, nutrition, etc., to help coaches develop specific programs and plans for training and education for athletes before the Olympics.

- In 2024, there are many other important tournaments. In your opinion, what is the solution to overcome the current difficulties of our country's sports to help Vietnamese sports truly reach out to the world?

-In 2024, in addition to the Paris Olympics, Vietnamese sports will also have many tournaments at the regional, continental and world levels.

The Vietnam Olympic Committee and the Department of Physical Training and Sports are working closely with localities, federations and associations to seek financial resources to ensure that athletes are able to train and compete in all tournaments around the world; helping athletes gain experience and accumulate points for future tournaments.

In addition, the issue of training facilities is still limited at the National Sports Training Centers, because athletes in key sports need training and competition venues, as well as scientific staff and modern training equipment to support training.

The sports industry has closely coordinated with international federations, especially relations with countries such as China, Japan, Korea and some European countries to bring our key athletes to train and compete, helping athletes to break their performance thresholds and quickly achieve results at the upcoming Olympics.

- Thank you very much, Director!
