On May 17, information from the Lao Cai Department of Health said that in Tri Quang commune (Bao Thang district), there had just been a case of food poisoning due to drinking wine made from the plant.

Mr. Trieu Kim P.'s family organized a lunch for 11 people with dishes of goose meat, chicken, pork, pig's feet, Malabar spinach, goose blood pudding, wine soaked with the roots of the ivy plant and white wine.

During the meal, 3 people drank wine soaked with Chinese yam that the family grew and soaked in wine.

After drinking a few small cups, all three people had symptoms of stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and blurred vision, so they were taken to the emergency room.

The test results of the National Institute for Food Safety and Hygiene Control showed that the sample of wine soaked with Chinese clematis tubers and the sample of Chinese clematis tubers taken by Bao Thang District Medical Center from Mr. P's family's meal both detected the toxin phytolactoxin.

According to the Department of Food Safety and Hygiene of Lao Cai province, the plant is a perennial herb. The plant has an average height of about 1.5 m, a smooth, hairless, cylindrical stem with few branches, green or purple-red in color. The leaves are large, alternately arranged with round, oval-shaped blades, petioles, smooth on both sides, 10 - 30 cm long and 13 - 14 cm wide.

The flowers of the plant are white, the inflorescence is clustered, consisting of many flowers, 15 - 20 cm long, the thick root looks similar to ginseng (easily confused), the berries are purple-red.

In oriental medicine, the plant can be used as a medicine to treat some diseases but must be used under the guidance of a physician. Phytolaccatoxin is a poison found in all parts of the plant.

When ingesting a large amount, the patient will feel numbness in the lips and tongue, abdominal pain, sweating, dilated pupils, increased mucus secretion, vomiting, low blood pressure, convulsions, respiratory paralysis, coma and may die if not treated promptly.

To avoid poisoning by natural toxins, the Lao Cai Province Food Safety Department recommends that people absolutely do not eat strange animals and plants, do not arbitrarily use traditional medicine or oriental medicine without a doctor's instructions, and do not drink too much medicinal wine.

When food poisoning occurs, it is necessary to keep and preserve all the food eaten to serve the investigation. At the same time, take the patient immediately to the nearest medical facility for timely treatment and emergency care.
