The number of Hanoi students entering public grade 10 accounts for 60.9% of the total number of junior high school graduates, higher than the 55.7% expected by the Department of Education and Training.

This is the data after 30 public high schools lowered their 10th grade benchmark scores, Director of the Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong said at the working session of the Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee with Hoang Mai district on school construction, on the afternoon of July 11.

According to Mr. Cuong, the rate of students entering public grade 10 reaching over 60% is in line with the regulations on streamlining after junior high school. This year, Hanoi has 78,620 out of 129,210 students admitted, an increase of 1,000 compared to the previous school year. This number is the total quota of 117 specialized and non-specialized high schools, 9 autonomous public schools, and 8 joint-management schools.

This figure is of interest because yesterday, the Government requested the Ministry of Education and Training to direct the review and report on Hanoi's public 10th grade enrollment work, after information about the record low 10th grade enrollment rate (55.7%).

Responding to Chairman Tran Sy Thanh's question about the "hot" areas lacking schools, Mr. Cuong said that they were Hoang Mai, Bac Tu Liem, and Nam Tu Liem districts. These are areas with many new residential areas, causing great "pressure" on schools.

According to Mr. Cuong, the department also received many applications for transfer from students from other localities because their parents returned to Hanoi for work. Just yesterday (July 10), there were 20 students in this category.

"If the minimum housing area for permanent residence registration in Hanoi's inner city is 15 square meters of floor space per person, the number of people moving to Hanoi will continue to increase in the near future. The entire political system needs to continue to participate in meeting the school demand," Mr. Cuong shared.

The Department of Education and Training is coordinating with departments and branches to rebuild the school planning network, proposing to review unqualified projects to recover land funds and switch to building schools.

"We strongly agree with the determination to deal with projects with corrugated iron fences and delays, and to allocate public investment funds to build schools or socialize and add more classrooms for children," said Mr. Cuong.

Previously, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training proposed to renovate and repair 123 schools under the Department's management from now until 2025. In addition, the city plans to build 16 more schools, including 7 inter-level schools. The total investment for these 139 projects is VND8,873 billion, from the city budget. Mr. Cuong said that 93 projects have been approved in principle.

Kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools are managed by the district level, the number of renovation and expansion projects is 494, the remaining 20 are in the process of procedures. Mr. Cuong hopes that localities will review land funds and budgets to invest in high schools.

Students taking the 10th grade exam in Hanoi in 2022

In the 2022-2023 school year, Hanoi has 129,210 junior high school graduates. Of these, 104,000 students registered to take the entrance exam to grade 10 public schools. If calculating the admission rate over the number of students registered to take the exam, the number of students admitted to public schools is nearly 75.6%, higher than in 2022 and 2021 (72%).

Meanwhile, one goal of the project "Career education and student orientation in general education for the period 2018-2025" is that by 2025, at least 40% of junior high school graduates will study at vocational training institutions. In difficult areas, this figure is 30%.

About 51,000 students who do not enter public schools in Hanoi this year will attend private schools, vocational education - continuing education centers or switch to vocational training.
