Snow falls in Ha Giang

For the first time since December 2022, snow has appeared in some villages of Meo Vac mountainous district in the North, with temperatures dropping to 2-4 degrees Celsius.

From 8am this morning, snow and rain began to fall on the mountain tops of Lung Van Chai village, Xin Cai commune; Xin Phin Chu village and Mo Phang village, Thuong Phung commune, Meo Vac district. These two communes are located at an altitude of 1,500-1,700 m, with temperatures dropping by 2-4 degrees Celsius.

By midday, snow was still falling but lightly and had not yet formed a layer on roads, roofs or vegetation. This was the first recorded snowfall in the North during the 2024-2025 winter season. The last time it snowed was in December 2022.

Mr. Chao Chin Chan, Chairman of Thuong Phung Commune, said that for many days, people have been encouraged to stockpile food and fence their barns to keep their livestock and poultry warm. This morning, when it snowed, the authorities continued to use loudspeakers to instruct people to keep warm.

Since last night, a strong cold front has swept down to the North, causing rain and a rapid drop in temperature. It is forecasted that from January 27 to 29, this area will be very cold (average daily temperature from 13 to 15 degrees Celsius), mountainous areas will be very cold (from 13 degrees Celsius or lower), and high mountains may have frost and frost due to temperatures falling below 3 degrees.

Previously, from December 21, 2024 to January 20, 2025, three cold spells swept down to the North. Of which, the spell from January 9 caused widespread cold. The lowest temperature in Dong Van (Ha Giang), Dinh Lap (Lang Son), Trung Khanh (Cao Bang) dropped to 0 degrees Celsius, many mountain peaks were covered in white ice.
