These days, storms and floods have caused a lot of damage, which is a reminder of the need to respond to natural disasters and combat climate change today. With creativity and dynamism, Hai Duong youth have been participating in adapting to climate change, contributing to reducing the risk of natural disasters.
To improve the capacity to prevent and respond to the severity of natural disasters, in recent years, the Youth Union at all levels in the province has continued to maintain and supplement 235 youth volunteer teams to protect the environment and respond to climate change with 2,150 youth participating. More than 40,000 youth union members and people have been educated about environmental protection and climate change response.
In particular, in recent days, immediately after receiving a request from Hai Duong Provincial Youth Union, these youth volunteer teams have been deployed to prevent storms and floods with meaningful and practical activities.
Nearly 8,000 youth union members and shock troops supported many tasks such as cleaning up fallen trees, cleaning the landscape of offices, school grounds, medical stations, martyrs' cemeteries, etc.
Realizing that many agricultural products were affected by floods, the youth force quickly found ways to support consumption to help people minimize damage. Dozens of tons of agricultural products such as melons, grapefruit, bananas, and guava were quickly consumed. Floods and rising river water affected many fish cages, and the Youth Union at all levels in the province also quickly supported the consumption of dozens of tons of caged fish to help people. On the afternoon of September 11, the Provincial Youth Union and the Hai Duong Province Youth Entrepreneurs Association supported people in Tu Ky district to consume 3.5 tons of caged fish. These activities will continue to be maintained in the coming days to demonstrate the responsibility of the youth to the community, accompanying people to overcome the difficulties of the storm and flood season.
Hai Duong Provincial Youth Union also called for and supported the transportation of food, drinking water, and necessities for the military, police, youth volunteers, and organizations... who are on duty to overcome the consequences of the storm and fight floods. At the same time, they visited, encouraged, and gave gifts to families affected by storm No. 3.
Faced with rising water levels on rivers in Hai Duong, together with armed forces and local people, young people continued to participate in flood prevention support. On the night of September 10, Thanh Mien District Youth Union sent a rapid response team of 45 young people and other forces to support Hong Phong commune in evacuating all 103 people, including 29 elderly people and 74 children, outside the Luoc River dike to safety.
Youth Union members in other localities also actively participated in supporting the evacuation of people and property from flooded areas and areas at risk of flooding; coordinated in overcoming dike incidents such as overflow prevention, handling of extrusion and aeration lines, etc.
In order to contribute to demonstrating the role of the young generation in efforts to respond to climate change, the youth force promotes volunteer activities such as propaganda, dissemination of knowledge, raising awareness, aiming to change behavior on community hygiene, environmental protection, actively participating in planting trees, protecting forests, protecting water resources...
Youth Union members are also active propagandists spreading awareness to people about the impact of climate change, thereby changing their perception and behavior towards nature. Actively deploy new energy-saving solutions, change habits and lifestyles towards reducing the use of devices that increase greenhouse gas emissions. Use environmentally friendly products, actively plant trees, and limit the use of plastic waste.
Responding to the Government's Project to Plant 1 Billion Trees and the goal of planting 100 million new trees set by the Central Youth Union in the 2021-2025 period, Youth Union chapters at all levels in the province actively planted millions of trees. On the first "Green Sunday" in 2024 alone, the whole province planted about 38,750 more trees.
In March 2023, for the first time, the Provincial Youth Union and the Youth Union of Hai Duong province launched the model "Youth Nursery, for a green Hai Duong" at the Provincial Forest Protection Department with more than 20,000 seedlings. After successful incubation, the seedlings were donated to the Youth Union bases to build green fences and youth tree rows along rural roads, reducing the cost of buying seedlings every year.
From this model, in Youth Month 2024, Gia Loc District Youth Union has expanded the "Youth Nursery" at commune and town Youth Union bases. Shade trees, ornamental plants, flower plants or medicinal plants, each unit has a different implementation method but all aim for practical benefits.
In addition, activities to clean up village roads, alleys, and models to prevent plastic waste are regularly carried out, contributing to promoting the pioneering and voluntary role of Hai Duong youth in participating in environmental protection and climate change adaptation.
In many schools, teachers proactively incorporate and integrate content on environmental protection and climate change response into subjects, especially natural and social sciences, geography, and in flag-raising and experiential activities. These lessons help students know how to protect the environment, not litter, care for trees, and educate parents and relatives about protecting the living environment. In addition, teachers also guide students to know how to prevent, share, and help people in difficult circumstances when natural disasters and floods occur.
As a young generation, each young person needs to be aware of their role and responsibility in preventing climate change and overcoming the consequences caused by climate change. With the spirit of volunteerism, youth union members can mobilize their families, schools, and communities to participate in environmental protection movements and respond to climate change.
During the process of participating in the task of overcoming the consequences of storm No. 3 and preventing flooding, responding to dike incidents in the province, the Youth Union members of the Provincial Police Department have contacted and grasped many different pieces of information, including many false information, causing panic and fear among the people. Specifically, from September 9-11, the Provincial Police Department has fined 21 cases and reminded many other violations related to false information about the flood situation.
In that situation, with the role of shock troops, the Youth Union of the Provincial Police has reviewed and verified information posted on the Internet with false content related to natural disasters, storms, floods, and dike incidents in the province. If individuals are found posting false information, depending on the severity, the police will summon and invite the violators to the headquarters to impose penalties. Call on the Youth Union of the Police to share the signs of fake news and false news. At the same time, spread positive information, greening social networks, contributing to stabilizing people's psychology during natural disasters and storms.
Youth and people should not be subjective about the flood situation, but need to be alert and selective when accessing information, not believe or spread unverified information.
Captain Nguyen Trong Hieu,Secretary of the Youth Union of the Internal Political Security Department, Hai Duong Provincial Police
Immediately after Thanh Mien District Youth Union deployed the plan of the District Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Command to the Youth Union bases, we encouraged the Youth Union members to participate. Although busy with professional work, many teachers and Youth Union members registered to participate. Starting from September 10, from 7-12 pm, our task was to pack sandbags, transport soil to build embankments to prevent water; at the same time, encourage people to be ready to evacuate, help transport assets to safety.
In times of floods like this, as a youth force, we realize that we need to promote the spirit of volunteerism to support people in a timely manner; solidarity, mutual love in difficult situations. This is a meaningful work, not only contributing to protecting the people of Hong Phong commune in particular but also ensuring the safety of people in the district and neighboring areas.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tai, Secretary of the Youth Union of Thanh Mien III High School
There is a saying: “First water, second fire, third bandits”. “Water” is the first danger. As a country that suffers from 10-15 large and small storms every year, recently the frequency of extreme weather phenomena and natural disasters has been increasing and becoming more unexpected. I think the younger generation like us needs to be more clearly aware of the consequences of climate change. This is an issue that requires alertness in perception and action from young people. We need to raise our vigilance, be proactive and calm, be ready to face it, and not be subjective, indifferent or apathetic. Young people need to promote the spirit of volunteerism, first of all for the community where they live, to spread the right awareness about natural disasters, climate change and be ready to join hands to support when a disaster occurs.
Having directly experienced and witnessed storms and floods in the Northern provinces, I am more deeply moved and hope that young people will raise awareness, equip themselves with knowledge and skills to prevent natural disasters and respond to climate change; believe in the leadership of the Party and State, solidarity is the strength to overcome this difficult period together.
