Salary increase - the biggest wish of Koreans

According to a survey by polling firm Embrain Public, 77.7% of South Korean workers expect a pay raise in 2024.

In addition, about 25.8% want less stressful work or shorter working hours; 24% want to stabilize their job or move to a permanent position, and 18.4% wish to have more comfortable vacations.

While a raise is the top wish across all age groups, the second wish is different. Those in their 20s say they want to move to a better company, while those in their 30s and 40s prefer to work less, and those in their 50s prefer stability.

About 70.6% of respondents said they expect work life to get better this year, while 29.4% believe it will get worse.

The Korea Labor Institute published similar research results in its quarterly journal.

The study divided workers under 35 into four groups, based on hours worked: under 15 hours, 15 to 40 hours, 41 to 52 hours, and over 52 hours per week. They then analyzed how work hours affected young people's satisfaction levels.

As a result, people in group two showed the highest level of satisfaction (59.4%), followed by group one (52.3%), group three (50.4%) and finally group four (45.4%). The numbers indicate that the longer the working hours, the lower the satisfaction rate.

Long working hours have been shown to have a negative impact on workers' happiness, according to researcher Park Joo Sang of the Labor and Human Resources Research Center at Pukyong University, the study's author.

He said youth employment policies regarding working hours needed to meet international standards to improve that.
