Mu Cang Chai terraced fields receive special national monument certificate

Mu Cang Chai terraced fields are ranked as a special national monument, and the New Rice Celebration Festival of the Mong people in Mu Cang Chai district, Yen Bai province is included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.

On the evening of December 31, in Mu Cang Chai district, the People's Committee of Yen Bai province solemnly held a ceremony to announce the decision and receive the certificate of ranking the Mu Cang Chai terraced fields as a special national monument and certify the new rice celebration of the Mong people in Mu Cang Chai district, Yen Bai province as a national intangible cultural heritage.

At the ceremony, many unique art performances took place, recreating the process of reclaiming and conquering high mountain slopes to create a system of terraced fields serving human life and unique cultural traditions revolving around this special form of farming.

The performances at the ceremony also recreated majestic and poetic natural images, close and simple community culture and friendly and sincere Mu Cang Chai people, along with beliefs and hopes for a bright future in the highlands of Mu Cang Chai.

Mr. Tran Huy Tuan, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, emphasized that Yen Bai province will continue to implement activities to preserve and promote the value of relics and heritages in the area.

In particular, promoting the image of the special national relic of Mu Cang Chai terraced fields and the national intangible cultural heritage of the New Rice Celebration Festival associated with building brands of traditional products to serve tourism development to arouse people's pride, guide people to fully understand, raise awareness of self-protection, preservation and promotion of the value of relics and heritage. Turn heritage into assets serving the cause of economic, cultural and social development of the locality. Effectively implement policies for folk artisans, those who have worked hard to preserve, conserve and pass on the unique traditional cultural values ​​of ethnic groups.

In addition, Yen Bai province will promote tourism development links, especially promoting the value of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, the Thai Xoe dance. Strive from now to 2025 to build Mu Cang Chai district into a tourist district and Nghia Lo town into a cultural-tourist town.

In 2007, the unique terraced fields in Mu Cang Chai, Yen Bai were officially recognized as a national landscape by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. This was an important and memorable milestone.

Then, on December 31, 2019, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 1954 on the ranking of special national monuments (phase 10) for 7 monuments. Among them, Mu Cang Chai terraced fields is one of the 7 monuments ranked in this phase.

Recently, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism also issued Decision No. 824/QD-BVHTTDL on the announcement of the list of national intangible cultural heritage. Accordingly, the New Rice Celebration of the Mong people in Mu Cang Chai district, Yen Bai province was included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage in the category of social customs and beliefs.
