Nguyen Thi Dung promised to find a surrogate mother for an infertile family but lied about the information to embezzle more than one billion dong.
On December 22, the Criminal Police Department (Da Nang City Police) arrested and extradited Nguyen Thi Dung, 38 years old, from Thai Nguyen to Da Nang to investigate fraud through surrogacy "brokers".

According to the accusation, at the end of 2021, Dung introduced himself as having helped many couples have children thanks to his ability to find egg donors and surrogacy, then invited Mr. Nha (65 years old, living in Da Nang) and his wife who were infertile.
Dung said the initial cost of finding an egg donor, ovulation stimulation drugs, egg retrieval, and embryo preparation would be 150 million VND. In January 2022, Dung announced that she had found a suitable match, a 25-year-old girl in Hanoi. The next procedures were carried out at a hospital in Thai Nguyen.
Dung agreed on a total cost of 380 million VND for the surrogacy package with the girl. However, when she went to the hospital to do the egg stimulation procedure, she did not meet the requirements. Dung paid about 90 million VND and looked for someone else to replace the "contract" but all to no avail.
Unable to find an egg donor, Dung did not inform Mr. Nha of the truth and lied that everything was going well. In August 2022, Dung announced that the embryo transfer into the surrogate mother was successful, asking Mr. Nha to go to Thai Nguyen to meet the pregnant woman and go for an ultrasound together at a private clinic.
Dung then regularly texted to update the health of the fetus, sent ultrasound images to gain Mr. Nha's trust and repeatedly asked for money transfers. In October 2022, when Mr. Nha became suspicious, Dung promised that if the child born after DNA testing was not his, she would return the money.
In February 2023, Dung announced that the surrogate mother had given birth, but a DNA test showed that the child was not related. Dung did not keep her promise to return the more than one billion VND she had received, so Mr. Nha denounced her.
Dung declared all the money used to invest in virtual currency and lost it all.
