Vietnam - Indonesia relations are "truly friends, truly brothers"

During his visit to Indonesia, on the afternoon of August 5, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue delivered a speech at the foreign policy forum held at the Indonesian Foreign Policy Community Institute - the leading policy research center in Indonesia and the region.

Also attending from the Indonesian side were the Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee of the Indonesian House of Representatives, leaders of the Indonesian Foreign Policy Community Institute, and many scholars and students.

The speech by National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue was themed “Vietnam-Indonesia strategic partnership: closely linked, striving together for a dynamic, inclusive, peaceful, cooperative and developed Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean”.

The National Assembly Chairman reviewed the history of relations between Indonesia and Vietnam, which have deep cultural closeness.

The National Assembly Chairman shared: Cultural similarities, national founding ideology, geographical proximity and close historical ties as well as common aspirations for peace are the natural glue that binds our two peoples, carrying timeless values.

That meaningful and warm bond has been continuously nurtured by generations of leaders and people of the two countries, just as our President Ho Chi Minh stated to President Sukarno in 1959: 'We are truly friends, truly brothers'.

Sharing about the context of the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions, the National Assembly Chairman said that peace and development cooperation are still the major trends, but competition, strategic separation, and conflicts of interests among major countries are increasing.

Regarding the ASEAN region, the National Assembly Chairman emphasized that after nearly 6 decades of formation and development, ASEAN has never been in such a good position as it is today, but it has also never faced as many challenges as it does today. Therefore, according to the National Assembly Chairman, ASEAN must be strong to be self-reliant and self-reliant. ASEAN needs to reposition itself, initiate ideas, arouse self-reliance, and unleash resources for community development.

The National Assembly Chairman proposed taking the 3 "Unities" as the solid foundation and roots for ASEAN's flexible and creative actions.

Unity in upholding principles is reflected in maintaining strategic balance in ASEAN relations with partners. Unity in maintaining consensus is reflected in ASEAN maintaining consensus in security and important development of the region... Unity in community building is also reflected in taking people as the center, subject, goal and driving force of the community building process.

Regarding cooperation within ASEAN, Vietnam highly appreciates Indonesia's important contributions to ASEAN, most recently the building of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indian Ocean and the Pacific (AOIP).

The National Assembly Chairman cited the proverb “If you want to go fast, go alone/If you want to go far, go together” and the speech of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong when visiting Indonesia in 2017: “Together with ASEAN, Vietnam and Indonesia will continue to develop; together with Indonesia and Vietnam, ASEAN will grow stronger, contributing worthily to peace, independence, cooperation and development in the region and the world.”

Vietnam and Indonesia are in a period of "heavenly time, geographical advantage, and human harmony"

In a volatile world, one thing that remains constant for Vietnam is the spirit of "peace, harmony, and friendship" in its foreign policy.

Vietnam identifies parliamentary diplomacy as playing a very important role, promoting soft power to contribute to deepening the friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and other countries and partners.

In particular, within ASEAN, the Vietnamese National Assembly always attaches importance to, accompanies, and has many outstanding contributions and imprints to the cooperation mechanism, typically AIPA.

The National Assembly Chairman stated that the Vietnam-Indonesia strategic partnership is being comprehensively developed in both breadth and depth, actively contributing to a dynamic, inclusive and sustainable regional structure.

Vietnam and Indonesia have stood side by side in history and today are hand in hand to realize the aspiration of 2045, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the country, to become developed countries. The two countries have many favorable conditions and potentials to coordinate their stances and cooperate in the region and globally.

The National Assembly Chairman affirmed that the connection of interests and similarities in strategic thinking are the driving forces for the Vietnam-Indonesia relationship to move forward steadily... The relationship between the two countries is in a period of convergence of "heavenly time, geographical advantage, and human harmony" to together overcome and gain many new achievements.

The National Assembly Chairman said that it is not possible to imagine the world in 2045 - the moment when the two countries celebrate their 100th anniversary of national founding, but it is certain that Indonesia and Vietnam have full will, aspiration and determination to cooperate to realize together the aspiration of becoming rich and developed countries.

The National Assembly Chairman used the image of the Wilson bird of paradise of Indonesia - known as the most beautiful bird of paradise in the world - and the Lac bird of Vietnam - a legendary bird of ancient Vietnamese people found on Dong Son bronze drums.

These two birds spread their wings and fly high as a symbol of the desire to conquer the sky, representing the aspiration, spirit and strong belief, bringing the Vietnam - Indonesia strategic partnership to a new height, contributing to building a dynamic, inclusive, peaceful, cooperative and developed Asia - Pacific and Indian Ocean.
