The USGS said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 32km at about 10:37 p.m. on December 2 (local time), about 21km northeast of Hinatuan city in Surigao del Sur province on Mindanao island.

According to AFP news agency, local authorities warned of a possible "destructive tsunami" and called on people in coastal areas to evacuate.

"There could be a destructive tsunami, with waves of life-threatening height," the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warned on Twitter.

The institute predicted waves higher than 1 meter would hit the coast and advised people in Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental provinces to "immediately evacuate" to higher ground or further inland.

Meanwhile, the US Tsunami Warning System said waves up to 3m above tide level could occur along some Philippine coasts.

Earthquakes are common in the Philippines. The country lies along the “Pacific Ring of Fire” – an area of seismic and volcanic activity that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Ocean.

Most of these earthquakes are too weak for humans to feel. However, powerful and destructive earthquakes do occur randomly, and there is no technology to predict exactly when or where they will occur.
