The electric vehicle market has been volatile, causing Nissan to decide to cancel plans to introduce a small electric SUV to American customers.

Nissan will not continue the project to produce small electric cars in the US

In 2022, Nissan announced plans to expand its electric vehicle lineup in the US with a small electric SUV, along with the Leaf and Ariya that were already available. However, according to Motor1, the Japanese automaker canceled this plan when it realized that the market was volatile, and other automakers also made moves to adjust their electrification orientation.

Automotive News reports that Nissan will no longer be building small electric vehicles in the US. Instead, the EV will be built at another of the company’s facilities in Sunderland, UK.

This electric SUV, codenamed PZ1L, is smaller than the Rogue but larger than the Leaf hatchback. Motor1 website commented that the new electric car will be similar in size to the Nissan Kicks.

Initially, Nissan planned to produce the small electric SUV at its Canton (Mississippi) factory, which received a $500 million investment for the production of pure electric cars by Nissan and the luxury car brand Infiniti.

Motor1 reports that Nissan still plans to build two larger electric SUVs and two sedans at its Canton plant for U.S. customers. The Japanese automaker hopes that canceling the smallest model will increase production of the other four models.

“We will continue to evaluate the market opportunity for new models and adjust accordingly,” Nissan spokesman Brian Brockman told Automotive News.

Motor1 said the new compact electric car will not affect the plan to launch an electric car to replace the Nissan Leaf.

“We have previously confirmed that the Nissan Leaf replacement will be launched in 2025 and this plan has not changed,” the Japanese automaker told Motor1.

It is known that the successor to the Nissan Leaf will switch to an SUV design, inspired by the Chill-Out concept car launched in 2021.
