Special regulations in medical admission in 2024

There are currently about 30 medical schools nationwide. Common admission methods are direct admission, based on high school graduation exam scores or a combination of exam scores with international language certificates, and school records. Admission combinations are usually B00 (math, chemistry, biology) and A00 (math, physics, chemistry). Candidates also need to meet the minimum score set by the Ministry of Education and Training.

In addition, some schools have special conditions, or use other admission methods and combinations.

Candidates over 27 years old are not considered.

Phan Chau Trinh University recruits 410 students, of which 160 are in medicine and 50 are in dentistry. The general requirement is that candidates must be 27 years old or younger, as of September 1, 2024.

5 admission methods include: direct admission, considering high school graduation exam scores, considering grade 12 transcripts, based on the results of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's capacity assessment exam and considering university graduation results.

With the following three methods, the school does not recruit candidates according to the regular education system in high school.

Admission by combination of subjects including literature

The use of combinations of subjects including literature to select medical students has been controversial since last year. This year, many schools are still using these combinations.

Van Lang University (Ho Chi Minh City) enrolls medical students in 4 ways: direct admission, graduation exam scores, academic records, and Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam scores.

In terms of graduation exam scores and transcripts, the school uses four combinations, including combination D12 (literature, chemistry, English), in addition to three combinations A00 (math, physics, chemistry), B00 (math, chemistry, biology), D08 (math, biology, English).

Vo Truong Toan University (Hau Giang) and Tan Tao University (Long An) use the combination B03 (math, literature, biology) to recruit medical students. Other combinations are B00, A02 (math, biology, physics), D08.

In the graduation exam score review method, Duy Tan University recruits medical students with 4 combinations: A16 (math, natural science, literature), B00, D90 (math, natural science, foreign language) and D08.

Using SAT scores for admission

In 2024, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy will consider admission based on SAT scores for the first time in two majors: medicine and dentistry (5% of the target), in addition to traditional methods such as direct admission, graduation exam scores, and combined admission based on foreign language certificates and exam scores.

SAT is a standardized test used by many American and European universities for admission. When registering using this method, candidates must still have a total graduation exam score according to the combination that meets the minimum level according to the Ministry's regulations.

Use the exam scores of the teacher training college

Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy has not announced its 2024 enrollment plan but said it will use the results of the competency assessment exam organized by Hanoi National University of Education. This is the first time the school has used results from a separate exam and is also the first medical school to use the exam scores of pedagogical institutions.

The medical training program lasts 6 years. Tuition fees at schools currently range from several tens to several hundreds of millions of dong per year.
