On the morning of October 19, a man threw several objects resembling petrol bombs in front of the headquarters of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in the Nagatacho area of Chiyoda, Tokyo.

The man then drove his car into a fence in front of the Prime Minister's Office not far away and was arrested on the spot. Tokyo police are investigating the cause of the incident.

Japanese media reported the incident occurred just over a week before the country’s general election. According to NHK, the suspect threw 5-6 objects resembling petrol bombs at a riot police vehicle, causing a fire, but the fire was quickly extinguished and no one was injured.

The man, about 40 years old, also tried to drive into the Prime Minister's office premises but was unable to get past the fence surrounding the facility.

The suspect then tried to throw what appeared to be a smoke bomb inside, but was stopped and arrested by police at the scene. Kyodo News also reported that what appeared to be a petrol bomb was thrown at the LDP headquarters, while the fence surrounding the prime minister's office nearby was damaged by a car crash.

The man, in his 40s, was arrested in a pickup truck with several containers inside. Media footage showed police and firefighters checking the area in front of the LDP headquarters, while the entrance to the prime minister's office compound was blocked.

The media quoted Mr. Hiroshi Moriyama, Secretary General of the LDP, saying that the perpetrator's motive was still unclear and expressing outrage at this action in the context of the country preparing for elections.

Japan will hold a general election on October 27, an event that is seen as a test for new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who took office after winning the LDP leadership vote last month.

Japan has strict gun control laws and violent crime is rare. However, the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2022 shocked the country and the world. He was shot by a person with a homemade gun while attending an outdoor campaign event.
