The Provincial People's Committee has just recognized Thanh Lieu woodblock printing in Tan Hung ward (Hai Duong city) as a traditional craft.
Thanh Lieu woodblock printing has existed for more than 580 years, serving the needs of cultural, social and spiritual life, contributing to preserving cultural and historical values, and spreading knowledge to the community and society.
The founder of Thanh Lieu woodblock printing was the third-ranking scholar Luong Nhu Hoc, who was sent by the Le Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty (China) twice in 1443 and 1459. After two missions, he brought the woodblock printing craft back to his hometown and taught it to the people. The woodblock printing craft developed during the Later Le Dynasty (15th century), reaching its peak during the Nguyen Dynasty with the name of the Hong Lieu printing guild (the old name of Thanh Lieu village).
There are currently 8 households engaged in woodblock engraving in Thanh Lieu residential area. The average annual income of woodblock engravers is 120-150 million VND, and that of artisans is 150-200 million VND. The preparation of the woodblocks has been done by machine, while the woodblock engraving is done by hand.
Previously, in Hai Duong city, there were 3 professions recognized as traditional professions including Nguyen Xa carpentry, Duc Minh carpentry, and Lo Cuong rice paper.
